During the period 1986-1999, elementary education curriculum research coalesced around practice-centered reform, emphasizing how teachers think, know, and enact content. Studies converge on the integration of content knowledge, pedagogy, and knowledge of learners as a cohesive base for professional development, curriculum design, and classroom improvement. Researchers favored analyses of curriculum materials and classroom tasks, and the strengthening of university–school partnerships to support sustained reform through reflection, collaboration, and authentic practice.
